Most men are inherently selfish and feel entitled to their "promised" wives and future children. Women are also given the "Prince Charming" dream but we don't dwell on it too much. Struggling for a long time has made women a lot more resilient and mentally tough. We are alone sometimes, but never lonely

so some of the newest research does show covid can impact neurons and long covid includes serious neurological problems. like the brain damage can be so bad even in "mild" cases that a 6th grade could only have the reading level of a toddler. blaming ipads or bad parents of whats a major disabling health issue is... its a lot. im reminded of things like measles, scarlet fever, polio, etc having major debilitating longterm effects 100-200 years ago, where people would go blind etc because of a childhood infection. thats what happened to helen keller, actually. thank you for bringing up that issue. it gets ignored a lot and its very frustrating to see ppl calling children stupid when its a sign of greater, grim health crises. thats one reason why i love your channel, you get very nuanced adn dont just idk get outraged over current events.

Compounded by the fact that Black and brown women and men are more likely to go undiagnosed, more likely to be unemployed or underemployed (& increasingly underpaid), more likely to end up in poverty & more likely to be vulnerable to sexual assault and abuse. In my case, as a brown woman, I suspected I was autistic for quite some time. Then it turns out my parents knew I was autistic since I was a child for decades and thought it would be better to hide that information from me. They also thought that being diagnosed would mean I would be further subject to the banalities of a racist society that continues to intentionally enact harm and misunderstanding of POC and especially neurodivergent POC. And unfortunately, in many ways they are not wrong. They were trying to protect me. But the world knew I was autistic before I even did. So yes, self diagnosis is ABSOLUTELY valid. And it can often be the FIRST step to seeking further information and “official” diagnosis from a healthcare professional and psychiatrist.

i think you're missing the other side... of certain mental illnesses. i was silenced my whole life by my ex-family who were narcissistic sociopathic psychopathic, and now people want me to have compassion for THEM? what about the victims? the whole reason these harmful personality disorders exist is because of the people whose lives were RUINED because of them. it was so hard to emotionally/psychologically/physically recover from their abuse, which i could only do from self-diagnosing.. and im still recovering/may never fully recover financially (they stopped me from working), or socially (couldn't leave the house). the victim often LOOKS like the "crazy" one, and my family wanted everyone including me to believe that i was the problem and not them, when all i ever asked was that they be accountable for their own actions and to stop controlling me. our world should not cater to them any more than it already does.

And all of us that work in the Healthcare/ mental Healthcare system ask ourselves why we even spent all those years in school and bleed our compassion every day, just for people to not trust the validity of the entire field. AND THEN those same people use mental health terminology, incorrectly, to define themselves to others.

I appreciate the nuance here. I will say as a mental health practitioner who just got diagnosed with ADHD this year, it was largely thanks to the internet. It seems like inattentive ADHD is not often diagnosed with kids who do well in school. I was always very smart but veryyy inattentive. Always late, always late with assignments, and often distracted by conversation. I was told I was lazy, not living up to my potential, it's just anxiety, etc. I started seeing a psychiatrist 3 years ago bc it was free through my uni for a semester and git on anxiety meds. They did nothiiing but make me sick. I started seeing more and more videos about ADHD and I realized maybe that's why I can't focus on my work or go to bed early and maybe that's why I'm anxious! I said this to my psychiatrist and she laughed at me... Said "let's treat the anxiety first"... It took me 2 more years to finally work up the willpower and self-organization to see a new psychiatrist, get the diagnosis, and get on meds that ACTUALLY HELP! I was amazed that I didn't have to be tired all the time, I could focus better, and procrastinate less! It's not a cure-all, but even thinking that I had ADHD for 2 years made me change the way I worked so I could try advice based on that.

A psychologist doesn't prescribed medication but they do complete assessments for mental health and can absolutely diagnose. In some instances, psychiatrists look to psychologists for a diagnosis.

Damn this resonated so hard. Just left a relationship now because of incompatibilities that I had to explain were more than likes/dislikes, while we were on the brink of moving in and taking those next steps. I’ve also realized I get to a point in every relationship where I just….dont wanna be in it anymore. I love my own space and being in my own world. I have to just be honest with myself about that….even tho I do crave that end result of a family, it’s just like I repel commitment or some shit idk. My ideal home definitely has his/hers wings of the house 😂 The vocabulary, the laughter…man I had to subscribe.

I feel like part of the self diagnosis issue is that if implies that you've come to a conclusion. It's one thing to suspect you have a disorder and see a doctor about it, or not see a doctor about it if you can't or don't want to, i suppose. But if you are to a point of calling it a diagnosis, it makes me worry that people aren't willing to accept if their symptoms are actually for something else. I see posts on adhd subreddits where people are saying that they finally went to a doctor who actually diagnosed them with something else and saying that the dictor was clearly wrong. Of course, you should seek a second opinion if you think the first doctor got it wrong (especially if they said something like "you don't have autism because you can make eye contact" or "you're too smart to have adhd"), but I think there needs to be a willingness to accept that your self diagnosis was incorrect. When I got diagnosed with ADHD, I first thought I had depression and told my pediatrician. He gave me antidepressants they sucked ass and didn't do anything. I railroaded myself away from the correct diagnosis because I tried to figure it out myself (I also recognize that the doctor in question wasn't great for listening to a teenager at face value. He also had other issues.) I think if you suspect you have a mental health disorder, the best thing you can do to figure out what it is is to go to a specialist and tell them your symptoms. ADHD can look a little like Borderline Personality Disorder in some circumstances (and vice versa). According to the doctor who diagnosed my brother with autism, ADHD + anxiety needed to be ruled out first because the symptoms of those two combined can look like autism externally, but are caused by difficult things, and will have different treatments and support needs. Anecdotally, I have ADHD + anxiety and some people close to me have thought that it might be autism. I trust my psychiatrist though, and I scored pretty low on the raads-r test when I finally got curious enough to take it. I guess my biggest concern is the "What if you're wrong?" Are you willing to accept that it's something else? The other concern is what if you're wrong and it's something much more serious? My mom's "adult onset adhd" turned out to be the kind of sleep apnea that doesn't wake you up when you stop breathing. Another time she described to me what sounded very much like my experience with adhd. It was a blood sugar drop because she has diabetes and hadn't been able to access her meds.

Do you want to live in a safe stable society yes then you should care having the majority of working age men not working bc of mental health is a very bad thing if you can’t see that you’re brainwashed as a young man 20 the primary way I’ve made money is construction working and breaking my body down isn’t enough to impress women therefore I have given up and now live on social security I make the same as when I work except now I have health insurance and get to do less while you pay for it what I see is a lot of women saying the majority of men are terrible which isn’t true if you’re running into a person that represents 3 percent of a total population and blaming the whole it may be something with you lol

The funniest part of the amanda interview was how she tried to use her own academic credit to undermine the credibility of academics. Besides, I think self diagnosing is OK under certain circumstances, but they don't apply (I think) to Amanda. At least, isn't she rich and influential enough to acquire suitable health care? Maybe even go the extra length to find a black female psychologist? Loved your video btw, people go mad swinging around complex mental health disorders like narcissism. Forgetting and ignoring that people with perfect mental health can just as well be assholes

It’s really true that you don’t need to be white to participate in white-feminist antics. I see a lot of very right winged people that really hate feminism and lgbt rights. While they themselves aren’t even white in my country. It’s usually young men, they are part of very racist fraternity’s and sport clubs. Usually it’s trans people and gay people that really bothers them and they are kind of ‘incel minded’. It’s really unfortunate a lot of these guys are part of a lower social class and thus blame everything on woman’s rights and gay people. They vote for the extreme national right without understanding that those party’s are often extremely racist. And a huge part of the reason they are in the lower class.

Can folks please stop calling autism a mental illness? It's a developmental disability. Autistics have a different type of brain, not an illness in an otherwise healthy brain. Discovering that you are autistic and that your brain is just different - not sick, or broken, or in need of fixing - is a great relief and can be very empowering.

No, some people truly cannot be reformed or rehabilitated. Larger is the share of people who do not want to, even if it was possible. There are way too many people who owe me apologies, and I know I'm never getting 'em. But even if it did happen, I don't think I will forgive. Few are ever owed forgiveness, but yes, most people are definitely owed apologies which never come by.

Therapists don’t give mental health diagnoses. Or they shouldn’t. They cannot prescribe medication and they cannot recommend protocols. Psychiatrists do. People who went to medical school. Who spent a decade more in school, or 6 years more than me, with a lowly English B.A. That I spent a few years wearing headphones and listening to them speak their psych evals into what we used to call a tape recorder was what my 4 year degree apparently prepared me for. It was at a county mental health facility. There were 5 or 6 of the doctors, all with English as a second language. Only the French one made me type her med checks too. The part that always made me laugh is that psychiatrists are not allowed to diagnose their relatives or those close to them. Nor are they allowed to diagnose themselves formally (although I hear they think they have a million different ones in med school). So if a psychiatrist is not allowed to diagnose themselves, what makes someone who had -8 years of med school able to? We don’t diagnose ourselves with cancer, diabeties, etc. Bipolar Disorder is a great example. Bipolar I, Bipolar II. Rapid Cycling Mania. What they used to call Cluster A, B, or C personality disorders can add static to the diagnosis. ADD. ADHD. Adult ADHD. How about the diagnosis that you give yourself of, say, Panic Disorder? And when you drop dead from the heart or lung problem you actually have, maybe you will have wished you didn’t diagnose yourself. How about the huge number of people trying to convince the world and themselves that they have DID. Most pros don’t even believe this diagnosis exists. There has never been a case study that yielded a true diagnosis of DID. Someone in their teens and 20s would be confused, losing time, not showing off their alters. If it existed. I don’t know. As far as trigger warnings go, I think they’re dangerous. I have a ton of triggers. I have had a lot of trauma from before I was even in school until fairly recently. I started therapy and meds around 9. And they gave us kids some meds they certainly don’t anymore back in the early 90s. I never had trigger warnings growing up. I learned that you gotta go through something to get better. That you can’t go around, under, above, or away from it. If every time you hear about weight or rape or domestic violence etc you walk away, turn it off, put your fingers in your ears and go lalalala you will never be able to exist in the world and you will never heal. It’s pretty much the same as taking a drink.

thanks for the video khadija! the internet has been great about raising awareness about mental health disorders but those "10 signs you may have ___" are just the very, very start! and it's so hard to tell when people treat those videos as serious versus a starting point. i have a hard time believing that people would really just say something like "yeah i have autism" after watching a couple videos because i did tens of hours of research and thinking before even accepting that i might be autistic. i don't understand how people can treat very serious things so lightly. at the same time, i recognize that someone can do a lot of research and be wrong. for example, for a long time i thought i had adhd and sought diagnosis. i was prescribed a non-stimulant by my gp and gave up on official diagnosis after the psychiatrist it took me months to see said "i don't think you have adhd because you did well in school." was that psychiatrist a bit of an ass? yes. do i actually have adhd? i don't know. probably not? maybe? quick internet video self diagnoses have also caused some problems for me as someone who has genuinely done a lot of research and genuinely do believe i am autistic. 1) people are less likely to take me seriously because there are so many people who self-diagnose with hardly any research or introspection. 2) i fear that i am one of those people and sometimes feel like a fraud for trying to accommodate myself

On the topic of treatment avoidance: I think dated diagnostic criteria is another issue, in line with distrust of the medical system. Some people will seek care, but struggle to get diagnosed and treated in a way that helps them, especially if there are behavioral assumptions or gender stereotypes informing diagnosis. For perspective, I started treatment when I was 15-16. Since I was an AFAB with trauma who self-harmed, a psych ward had a BPD differential diagnosis in my chart, so I got diagnosed pretty fast. Since I was on meds, I was consistently treated since then, but I was like 28 before I got tested and diagnosed with ADHD. I learned soon after that many AFABs aren't diagnosed until adulthood, often after their children receive a diagnosis. I've read similar things happen with autism, because the ways we've understood neurodivergence are things that were observed more often in boys/men, and so I think a lot of people (particularly if you have shit insurance or are in a community without a lot of mental health providers qualified to diagnose) feel they have to give up and educate themselves. Also worth mentioning: I know some folks who are under the trans umbrella and won't seek an autism diagnosis because they are concerned that, in our current political climate, that could cause medical discrimination including barriers to accessing gender-affirming care. So I've seen folks say "this is probably me, but I don't want this in my chart, and there's no benefit to getting a rubber stamp." So sometimes there are these political dimensions when you weigh different aspects of how/if to medicalize yourself, and I think your suggestion of a holistic approach can offset our need to feel like we *have* to be validated by the medical community to find something that helps us make sense of our experiences.

This real problem is that people are made to look for a diagnosis, instead of solutions for their problems. When we are talking about mental health It doesn't matter what we call the source of the problem, the names of mental disorder are all recent & ever changing, it's not that important. What important is identifying what are the real barriers to living a happy life & then setting up strategies to overcome those barriers.

I agree theres a stigma around personality disorders. Although personally for me my compassion can only go so far, because I only somewhat semi-recently got out an emotionally abusive relationship with someone diagnosed with NPD. Even though what they did was totally breaking me mentally, I wanted to stay because I felt empathy that they couldn’t control it, that it wasn’t their fault, that I needed to be there to support them and not turn my back on them. But it was only continuing to put me in a darker and darker place and once I actually broke it off completely with them, they justified everything by saying they couldn’t control it, so they didn’t do anything wrong and they were the real victim because i was cutting contact. And in a way I understand and I can only imagine how it must be to have NPD or other hard to control personality disorders. But I feel like it can quickly become a slippery slope of to what point their actions are understandable. Even if they truly couldn’t control it, that doesn’t excuse the immense mental damage it had on me and their completely lack of taking accountability. They would only take accountability when they could use it to further the abuse. I think we should have compassion, but not to the point we ignore people’s harmful actions. (Also! not saying all people with NPD are like this. Just adding my two cents)
